Ice Dam Removal in Allen, TX: One Method Works, Four Wreck the Roof

There is one way to take an ice dam off a roof without wrecking the roof, and it is the expensive one. Everything else hits, blasts, burns or dissolves a shingle assembly in the coldest week of the year. And none of it, the good method included, stops the next dam — because the dam is not made at the eave.

Steam is the method, and what separates it from a pressure washer is pressure

An ice dam steamer and a hot-water pressure washer are often the same chassis; the difference is what leaves the wand. A steamer runs low pressure, hot enough that the output arrives as a cloud and melts a channel. A pressure washer takes ice off by force — and whatever sits behind the ice takes that force too.

Asphalt has no tolerance for the second one. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, in its algae bulletin revised June 2024, bars high-pressure washing from asphalt roofing not only for algae but, in its own words, "for any other purpose." Ice is another purpose. IKO sets the same limit on its own product: pressurized water must not be aimed directly against the shingles, because it lifts them.

One caveat. The numbers quoted for steamers — usually around 200 psi and 250F — appear almost only in material published by firms selling ice dam removal, and we found them in no independent source. The principle survives without them: if the wand throws a jet, it is a pressure washer with a heater.

What people do instead, and what each one breaks

The National Roofing Contractors Association rules out the category: it "generally does not recommend homeowners attempt to remove ice dams or shovel snow off roofs," who "may cause more harm than good," and names "the roof covering, flashings and gutters" among what breaking up ice damages. ARMA supplies the material reason — cold shingles "may crack, or in severe cases, break apart," and ones over an uneven deck are "very susceptible to breakage underfoot in frigid weather." A December shingle is not the same object as a July shingle.

On the salt stocking, read University of Minnesota Extension's deicing guidance first: chloride "can degrade concrete, asphalt and natural stone, and corrode metals," sodium chloride "causes the most significant plant damage," and "one teaspoon of salt will pollute 5 gallons of water." Trace the meltwater — shingle, gutter, downspout, foundation bed — and the stocking is a chloride delivery system aimed at four things you own.

The ladder is the part that kills. CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report on occupational ladder falls, 25 April 2014, counted 113 deaths and an estimated 34,000 emergency-department-treated falls in one year, and found falls of six to ten feet accounted for half the ED cases. Gutter height, fair weather, people who climb for a living. Extension's warning stands: anyone on the roof in winter, "or performing work on the roof from below," risks injury.

What to do tonight, while it is still leaking

The documented emergency measure is smaller than people expect. UMN Extension says that where water is flowing into the structure, "making channels through the ice dam allows the water behind the dam to drain off the roof," that "hosing with tap water on a warm day will do this job," and to "work upward from the lower edge of the dam." The limit, same breath: "the channel will become ineffective within days and is only a temporary solution."

Note what that is not: a garden hose at ambient pressure, on a day above freezing, opening a drain path. Not a wand — and on a cold day it just builds more ice.

Most of the useful work that night is inside. Buckets under the drip, wet insulation pulled off the ceiling, drying started, because ice dam moisture "can lead to the growth of mold and mildew." Then do not repair interior damage until ceilings and walls are dry — and repair it "together with correcting the heat loss problem that created the ice dam or the damage will occur again."

Roof raking, and the trap nobody mentions

Pulling snow off the lower slope removes the water supply, and Extension names it first: it "eliminates one of the ingredients necessary for the formation of an ice dam." Both it and NRCA qualify that immediately — a rake or push broom "may damage the roofing materials"; NRCA lists damage "by dragging a snow rake across the roof."

So: from the ground, telescoping, never off a ladder, never near a service drop, pulled down rather than scraped. First few feet above the eave, then stop.

Then the consequence almost nobody publishes, which Extension does: clearing snow and fixing heat loss both increase the load your roof carries, because the snow stops leaving by melting. A house built to current code should be fine; an engineer settles it otherwise. Worth knowing before you conclude the roof was fine all along because the snow always went away.

Ice in the gutter is downstream of the problem

The gutter gets blamed because that is where the ice is visible and reachable. ARMA allows it a role — dams are "typically formed by the repeated thawing and freezing of melting snow or the backing up of frozen slush in gutters" — which is the strongest honest version: frozen slush gives the dam a starting lip and supplies none of the meltwater. That comes from a warm deck, and why the deck is warm is the actual subject.

An iced gutter is also not a thing to clear. The ice is bonded to the trough, the trough to fascia, and by the time it is packed you are prying at a loaded component over a walkway. Steam it or leave it — same for a frozen downspout, since where the water goes next is July work.

Ice dams and gutter guards, narrowly: a guard neither causes a dam nor prevents one, and the makers concede half of that — LeafFilter's published position is that its product neither prevents nor creates ice dams. Ice dam removal cost, and what to compare it against

Published rates are hourly, and the ordering is the finding. Fixr, updated 31 January 2025, ranks the methods per hour: salt and melt tablets at the bottom, chipping about double them, high-pressure water above chipping, and steam at roughly four times the salt rate and about twice chipping. Labor is around ninety percent of that figure and most bill a two-hour minimum whatever the house size, so on a small dam you are mostly paying for the truck to arrive. Angi and HomeGuide both 403 us, so anything of theirs here came from a search result rather than the page, and brackets a number without sourcing one. The safe method is the dearest, as in roof washing, for the same reason: gentleness takes longer.

Two comparisons make that legible. Against the damage: the Insurance Information Institute's homeowners loss table, on ISO data for 2018 through 2022, puts average claim severity for water damage and freezing near fourteen thousand dollars — an order of magnitude above a steaming call. Against the fix: steaming is a subscription to the symptom, and sealing the ceiling plane is bought once.

Ice dam prevention is a different trade from ice dam removal

Removal is roof work. Prevention is not: it happens inside the ceiling, in the order air seal, insulate, ventilate. Three things belong to this decision specifically:

  • Depth scales with climate, past code habit. Building Science Corporation's BSI-097: De-Icing Ice Dams recommends R-60 in ice dam regions, against the R-30 over ventilated attics its own BSD-135 gives as a general floor.
  • The vent channel needs room. BSC calls for a minimum 2-inch airspace under the sheathing where ground snow loads exceed 30 lb/ft², and says codes permitting only one inch are "wrong — in ice dam regions." That is depth, not area; the area arithmetic lives elsewhere, where the 1/300 exception requires both conditions, not either.
  • Ventilation is the junior partner, and snow buries it anyway. Fix the heat loss and "only small amounts of roof ventilation are needed," Extension says — after which snow builds up over the vents. It rules out powered attic ventilation outright, as "not a recommended solution to ice dams in Minnesota."

So the hire is a weatherization contractor running a blower door test and an infrared camera, not a roofer with a caulk gun. With one caution: tighten a house and "ventilation systems, exhausting devices and combustion devices must have enough air to operate safely."

The deductible, and the offer that arrives with the water in Texas

An emergency steaming is usually a cash job, small enough to sit under a deductible, while the ceiling damage behind it is the claimable part. Which is when someone offers to make your share disappear. Whether Texas legislated on that offer at all is the piece that varies most.

Waiving, rebating or absorbing your deductible is a criminal offense in Texas rather than a civil one, and it reaches the contractor who offers it. Note what that means for you: an invoice sent to your carrier for a price nobody intends to collect is a false statement about the claim, and your signature is on it.

Bottom line

Steam, or nothing. No chisel, no pressure washer, no flame, no stocking of rock salt, no ladder on ice to reach the height half of all ladder-fall ER visits come from. If water is coming in tonight, hose a channel upward from the lower edge on a warm day, catch the drip, pull the wet insulation, start drying. Then read the removal invoice as a subscription notice, because the only thing that cancels it is work done in the attic in July.

The path off your roof runs across asphalt shingles, into a metal gutter, down a metal downspout and onto whatever is planted at the foundation, and evergreens are the plants most easily killed by it.

IKO's position as a shingle maker is that roofers should avoid using any chemicals on your roof, since they may damage asphalt shingles and affect warranty coverage. Calcium chloride is the gentler chloride, not a harmless one.

The ratios travel better than the numbers. Should I take the gutter guards off to get rid of an ice dam?

No, and it is worth being clear that removing them does not drain anything. The dam forms on the roof plane above the gutter, where meltwater from a warm deck crosses onto a cold overhang, so the gutter and anything covering it are downstream of the problem.

A guard is not why you have a dam and taking one off in January means working at the eave, on ice, to reach a component that is already frozen shut. Even the manufacturers claim only neutrality here: LeafFilter's own position is that its product neither prevents nor creates ice dams.
